Australian universities cater to not only domestic students, but also a very large number of international students. This article explains and explores the significance of this little-known initiative under the White Australia Policy by reference to China's global resurgence, the role of the Chinese consulate-general in local community affairs, and support and resistance among Chinese community leaders in response to these developments.
This is what is most concerning to the Australian government, especially in light of recent revelations about the contracts many Australian universities have signed with Hanban (the Institute's Beijing headquarters) that 澳大利亚留学移民 may give Beijing direction over what these contracts describe as teaching quality” — a highly flexible phrase that could create an insistence on teaching materials, or provide parameters around class discussion.

In August, 2019, I compiled benchmark estimates of the size of the Chinese student market in a paper for the Centre for Independent Studies, The China Student Boom and the Risks It Poses to Australian Universities With Chinese students back in the news, I have taken the opportunity to revise, expand, and update these estimates with the latest available data.
While the Chinese students are keen to make connections with their Australian classmates, local students often appear diffident or uninterested - or perhaps simply lack the necessary cross-cultural skills A common sight in the mixed classroom is a split social scene: Chinese international students working and socialising with each other, and locals with locals.
Conducted over an 18-month period, the fieldwork comprised repeat interviews that sought to build up the different aspects of experiences and attitudes perceived by female Chinese students and how they coped with challenging experiences as individuals.

Most female Chinese students had employment intention in the UK. The experience of studying in the UK influenced the impression of the UK, and also influenced the intention to remain or to work in the UK. This thesis makes contributions to academic knowledge, to international education practitioners, and to prospective Chinese students considering study in the UK. This research has adopted a longitudinal approach which is a novel aspect from the methodological perspective.

However, a forensic examination of applications over the last three years indicates the strongest growth may be behind us. Growth in six out of the ten top sources of Chinese international student applications was slower in 2016-17 than 2015-16 (see Table 2 overleaf).
